All championship games feature North vs. South; 1A Boys All-North battle

The North will battle in all four state basketball championships today with the 1A being an all-North showcase.  

The state championship games are at noon (girls) and 2 p.m. (boys) across the region: 1A (Reno), 2A (Wooster), 3A (Fernley) and 4A (Spanish Springs).

 

1A 

In the girls bracket, No. 1W Pyramid Lake will go for its fourth title in a row after taking down No. 2E Owyhee, 85-49. The Lakers will face No. 1E Eureka, which defeated No. 2W Smith Valley, 36-29. Both Eureka and Pyramid Lake are meeting in the championship for the third time in four years. 

In the boys bracket, No. 2W Mineral County gets another shot at No. 1W Smith Valley after the Serpents defeated No. 2C Tonopah, 69-62. Smith Valley defeated No. 1C Spring Mountain, 81-53. The Bulldogs have been perfect against the Serpents this season, including winning last week’s regional title.

 

2A

The top seeds prevailed in both the girls and boys brackets.

In the girls, No. 1N Yerington defeated No. 2S Needles, 56-50, while No. 1S Lincoln County’s hot start was too much for No. 2 Oasis Academy as the Lynx won, 62-34. 

No. 1N Battle Mountain cruised to a 69-26 win over No. 2S Lake Mead while No. 1S Needles escaped No. 2N West Wendover, 64-56. 

 

3A

All but one game was decided by single digits as No. 1N Fallon had the largest win, 56-17 over No. 2S Boulder City, in the girls semifinal. In the other matchup, No. 2N Fernley nearly erased a 30-point deficit, falling to No. 1S Virgin Valley, 74-65. 

In the boys games, No. 1N Fernley squeaked by No. 2 Virgin Valley, 54-52, and No. 1S The Meadows clipped No. 2N Spring Creek, 41-37.

 

4A

It was almost an all-North final in the girls tournament as No. 1N Reno defeated No. 2S Mater East, 63-60. After leading late, No. 2N Spanish Springs fell to No. 1S Losee, 45-43.

In the boys games, No. 1N Bishop Manogue won by double digits, 74-51, over No. 2S Legacy. No. 2N Reno had a chance at the buzzer but couldn’t get past No. 1S Clark, falling 51-48.
