McQueen ends Spanish Springs’ streak

Lancers win six titles, four over Cougars.

CARSON CITY — McQueen snapped Spanish Springs’ 15-year regional title streak after finishing second last season and took the 5A Northern Region championship with six individual titles and 277 points.

Spanish Springs finished second with 242.5 points, followed by Damonte Ranch with 161.5, Reed with 159, Galena with 145 and Reno with 133.

The top six in each weight advanced to the state tournament Feb. 13-14 in Winnemucca.

McQueen took control in the finals, beating Spanish Springs in four championship bouts.

McQueen’s Cooper Sandoval won the 113 title over Logan Robbins, Abe Coronado won the 126 final over Mason Kendall, Brevin Curtis won the 144 final over Makiah Villa and Hudson Koch pinned Nolan Weese at 215. The Lancers added titles from Zaiden Hill at 120 and Cael Staggs at 138 and strengthened their lead with Taitan Green placing third at 132, Carter Koch sixth at 126, Tanner Frock fifth at 175 and Ruben Gonzalez sixth at 190.

Spanish Springs earned its lone title from Elijah Gustavson at 285 and finished with four runners-up in Robbins at 113, Kendall at 126, Villa at 144 and Weese at 215. The Cougars also qualified Brady Porter in second at 157, Brody Boscovich in third at 138, Joe Hawkins in fourth at 165, Gabe Parker in fifth at 132, Brody Cox in sixth at 132 and Sahib Sharma in sixth at 157.

Galena produced three champions with Patrick Dye at 132, Manakai Kirn at 150 and Tristan Diaz at 157 and added a runner-up from Lukas Arrowood at 132. The Grizzlies also qualified Heloke Kirn in third at 144, Andrew Kennon in third at 126, Gavin Perkins in fifth at 165 and Landon Olson in sixth at 106.

Reno opened the finals with a title from Arjun Mediwala at 106 and added runner-up finishes from Owen Layfield at 190 and Sam Weaver at 285. The Huskies also qualified Zach Lorrian in fifth at 106, Owen Prioreschi in fourth at 144, Max Vohland in third at 175, Felipe Avalos in sixth at 138 and Gavin Ispisua in sixth at 120.

Damonte Ranch was led by 175 champion Jared Hurlbert and a runner-up from Clay Ghisletta at 165. The Mustangs added third from Jeremiah Fragoso at 106, third from Benjamin Powning at 132, fifth from Kylen Green at 120, fifth from Leonidas Marakis at 138, fifth from John Genasci at 150 and fourth from Kyle Escamilla at 215.

Reed’s tournament featured 190 champion Oscar Casarez and a runner-up from Emiliano de la Torre at 285. The Raiders also qualified Daniel Agredano in third at 113, Rylund Nash in fourth at 138, Grayson Williams in fourth at 150, Marcus Ceniceros in fifth at 190 and Giovanni Rescalvo in sixth at 215.

Bishop Manogue’s Jaxen Faust won the 165 title and the Miners added fourth from Bruce Royce at 285 and sixth from Vincent Bonnette at 285. Carson qualified Matthew Manley in second at 138, Brant Reyna in third at 190, Ethan Linehan in third at 215 and Damian Porter in fifth at 157.

Douglas advanced Jesse Reiner in fourth at 175 and Vincent Cereghino in fourth at 157 and added fifth from Samuel Lopez at 175 and sixth from Izaak Conkle at 190. North Valley qualified Gabriel Acosta in third at 165, Lane Sallaberry in fourth at 150, Allan Ayala in fifth at 126 and Carlos Cordova in sixth at 215.

Hug qualified Brian Bernabe Verdin in third at 120, Sergio Olivera in third at 150 and Aiden Navarro in fourth at 106.

TEAM RESULTS

Bishop Manogue
Bishop Manogue earned a 165 title from Jaxen Faust and added top-six finishes from Bruce Royce and Vincent Bonnette.

Carson
Carson qualified four wrestlers, led by 138 runner-up Matthew Manley and top-six finishes from Brant Reyna, Ethan Linehan and Damian Porter.

Damonte Ranch
Damonte Ranch was led by 175 champion Jared Hurlbert and 165 runner-up Clay Ghisletta and added multiple qualifiers, including Jeremiah Fragoso, Benjamin Powning, Kylen Green, Leonidas Marakis, John Genasci and Kyle Escamilla.

Douglas
Douglas advanced four qualifiers, including fourth-place finishers Vincent Cereghino and Jesse Reiner and top-six finishes from Samuel Lopez and Izaak Conkle.

Galena

Hug qualified three wrestlers with top-four finishes from Brian Bernabe Verdin, Sergio Olivera and Aiden Navarro.

McQueen
McQueen snapped Spanish Springs’ 15-year regional title streak with six champions, including four head-to-head finals wins over the Cougars. The Lancers added four more top-six qualifiers to secure the team title.

North Valleys
North Valleys qualified Gabriel Acosta in third at 165 and added top-six finishes from Lane Sallaberry, Allan Ayala and Carlos Cordova.

Reed
Reed’s tournament included a 190 title from Oscar Casarez and a runner-up finish from Emiliano de la Torre at 285, along with top-six finishes from Daniel Agredano, Rylund Nash, Grayson Williams, Marcus Ceniceros and Giovanni Rescalvo.

Reno
Reno earned a 106 title from Arjun Mediwala and runner-up finishes from Owen Layfield and Sam Weaver and qualified several more, including Zach Lorrian, Owen Prioreschi, Max Vohland, Felipe Avalos and Gavin Ispisua.

Spanish Springs
Spanish Springs earned a heavyweight title from Elijah Gustavson and finished with five runners-up and several more qualifiers, including top-six finishes from Brody Boscovich, Joe Hawkins, Gabe Parker, Brody Cox and Sahib Sharma.
