Spanish Springs in front of McQueen after Day 1

Cougars, Lancers advance 11 to semis

CARSON CITY — Spanish Springs established a narrow six-point lead over rival McQueen on Friday to end Day 1 of the NIAA Class 5A Northern Region wrestling tournament at Carson High School. 

The Cougars sit at 107.5 points, just ahead of the Lancers’ 101.5, with both teams successfully pushing 11 wrestlers into Saturday’s championship semifinals. The stakes remain high for the final sessions as the top six finishers in each weight class will punch their tickets to the state championships next week.

Day 2 begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

 

Spanish Springs

The Cougars command the leaderboard with a massive semifinal presence. The Spanish Springs wrestlers who won their quarterfinals to reach the semis are Emery Lewallen at 106, Logan Robbins at 113, Kole Crafton at 120, Mason Kendall at 126, Gabe Parker at 132, Brody Boscovich at 138, Makiah Villa at 144, Brady Porter at 157, Joe Hawkins at 165, Andrew Corea at 175, Nolan Weese at 215 and Elijah Gustavson at 285. Spanish Springs also has Brody Cox and Sahib Sharma still alive in the consolation bracket.

McQueen

The Lancers stayed within striking distance by matching the leaders with 11 semifinalists. McQueen’s championship hopefuls include Cooper Sandoval at 113, Zaiden Hill at 120, Abe Coronado at 126, Taitan Green at 132, Cael Staggs at 138, Brevin Curtis at 144, Darren Brooks at 150, Cole Atkinson at 157 and Hudson Koch at 215. The team also has Tyson Brenner, Carter Koch, Matthew Foley, Noah Doyle, Tanner Frock, Ruben Gonzalez and Aidan Toloai still wrestling in the consolations.

Reed

The Raiders hold third place with 80.5 points and eight wrestlers still in the hunt for a title. Leading the charge for Reed in the semifinals are Daniel Agredano at 113, Jadyn Dewart at 120, Rylund Nash at 138, Kayden Williams Lopez at 144, Oscar Casarez at 190 and Emiliano de la Torre at 285. Reed also has Juan Sanchez-Cruz, Tyler Thomas, Elijah Balboa, Grayson Williams, Mykael Williams, Marcus Ceniceros and Giovanni Rescalvo still active in the consolation rounds.

Damonte Ranch

The Mustangs are positioned in fourth place and remain a threat with five semifinalists and eight wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket. The semifinalists for Damonte Ranch are Jeremiah Fragoso at 106, Clay Ghisletta at 165, Jared Hurlbert at 175 and Kyle Escamilla at 215. Still wrestling for the Mustangs are Kylen Green, Colton Cardinal, Micah Barrientos, Benjamin Powning, Leonidas Marakis, Brody Moore, John Genasci and Taylor Stanton.

Reno

The Huskies occupy fifth place with 63.5 points and five wrestlers in the championship semifinals. Semifinalists for Reno include Arjun Mediwala at 106, Max Vohland at 175, Owen Layfield at 190 and Sam Weaver at 285. Reno continues with Zach Lorrian, Gavin Ispisua, Felipe Avalos, Owen Prioreschi, Joey Wheatley, Jackson Hutchings and Linkoln Sanborn in the consolation bracket.

Galena

The Grizzlies saw significant success in the middle weights and have seven wrestlers in the semifinals. Moving into the semis for Galena are Andrew Kennon at 126, Lukas Arrowood at 132, Patrick Dye at 132, Heloke Kirn at 144, Manakai Kirn at 150 and Tristan Diaz at 157. Galena keeps Landon Olson, Jordan Low and Gavin Perkins in the consolation rounds.

Carson

Host team Carson advanced four wrestlers to the semifinals while five others look to battle through the consolation rounds. The Senators’ semifinalists are Matthew Manley at 138, Brant Reyna at 190 and Ethan Linehan at 215. Still wrestling for Carson are Daniel Walther, Gabriel Crounk, Wyatt Bauerle, Damian Porter, Joseph Martinez and Carlos Harris.

Douglas

The Tigers are currently in eighth place and pushed five athletes into the semifinal round. Representing Douglas in the semis are Vincent Cereghino at 157, Jesse Reiner at 175 and Izaak Conkle at 190. Still in the mix for Douglas are Uriah Brady, Adam Barnes, Ethan Halladay, Maddex Kuckenmeister-Jones, Grant Girdner, Samuel Lopez and Ryder Robasciotti.

North Valleys

North Valleys enters Day 2 with 39.5 points and five semifinalists. The Panthers in the semis are Hunter Washburn at 113, Allan Ayala at 126, Lane Sallaberry at 150 and Gabriel Acosta at 165. North Valleys also has Anderson Datinagurun Growel, Kian Fischer, Daniel Casas and Carlos Cordova still wrestling.

Bishop Manogue

The Miners sit in tenth place with 31.0 points and three wrestlers reaching the semifinals. Moving on for Manogue are Jaxen Faust at 165 and Bruce Royce at 285. Still alive for the Miners are Sutter Rasmussen, AJ Mingo, Malachi McElroy, Luke Wickenhiser, Nicholas Brockett and Vincent Bonnette.

Hug

Hug rounds out the field with four wrestlers in the semifinals. The semifinalists for the Hawks are Aiden Navarro at 106, Brian Bernabe Verdin at 120 and Sergio Olivera at 150. Hug currently has no wrestlers remaining in the consolation bracket.
