SPARKS — Reed withstood fierce challenges from Spanish Springs and McQueen to secure another regional title at this weekend’s Northern Nevada girls wrestling qualifier.
The Raiders overcame an early deficit against Spanish Springs on their home mat, trailing 63-55.5 before rallying to lead 175.5-166 heading into the championship bouts. This victory continues a dominant streak for Reed, which has won every regional tournament since the NIAA sanctioned the sport in 2021-2022.
Reed finished with a team score of 199.5 to claim first place.
Maya Fiodorova earned a first-place finish for Reed at 125 pounds by pinning Jasmine Tamondong of Douglas in 2:57. At 170 pounds, EliAnna Santos-Banks took the title with a 56-second fall over South Tahoe’s Diem Johnson. Arianna Santana added a gold medal at 190 pounds, defeating Kaylee Landis of McQueen by fall in 1:37. Charley Timms rounded out the individual champions for the Raiders at 235 pounds, pinning Madalyn Hitchcock of Spanish Springs in 1:17.
Several other Reed wrestlers secured state qualifying spots with top-four finishes.
Micah Norris finished in second place at 105 pounds. Tina Chavalithumrong also took second place at 140 pounds. Nyah Ortiz took fourth place in the 115-pound division. Jacinda Munoz-Aguilar and Miley Santos-Banks contributed to the team score with fifth-place finishes, while Xiomara Garcia placed sixth at 145 pounds.
Spanish Springs finished as the regional runner-up with 172 points.
Avah Garrett led the Cougars with a first-place finish at 130 pounds, defeating Kaitlyn De La Torre-Jackson of McQueen by fall in 4:57. Viviana Zavala, Isabella Corea, Amira Tau Lagrone and Madalyn Hitchcock all earned second-place medals. Bella Winrow finished third at 155 pounds, while Capri Curtis took fourth at 170 pounds. Sadie Jacobsen added a sixth-place finish for the Cougars at 135 pounds.
McQueen placed third overall in the team standings with 158 points.
Shyann Martinez won the 135-pound title with a fall over Ingrid Melgar Pivaral in 3:35. Jasmine Morales claimed the 155-pound championship by pinning Lily Hopkins of Carson in 2:53. Landis and De La Torre-Jackson finished second, Katlynn Sibrian took third and Hayzen Popson placed fourth. Kinsley Sandoval added a fifth-place finish at 120 pounds.
Douglas High followed in the standings with 100.5 points, led by champions Ella Kavanagh and River Klein. Tamondong took second while Ashlynn Kavanagh finished third. Isabelle Tamondong and Sasha Wadle added sixth-place finishes.
White Pine secured fifth place with 92.5 points behind third-place finishes from Brooklynn Reed, Juliane Hughes and Adelaide Costello. Valivia Weiland and Constance Gubler both placed fourth.
Fernley placed sixth with 80.5 points, highlighted by 100-pound champion Bronwynn Garrett and third-place finisher Faith Mhondo. Blessing Mhondo took fourth, while Faith Paulman placed fifth and Zoe Gillespie placed sixth.
South Tahoe finished seventh, led by second-place finisher Johnson and fourth-place finishers Alice Lilly and Galilea Zarate Cruz. Analiz Chua took fifth, while Lillia Verduzco placed sixth.
Hug took eighth place with 145-pound champion Mirakle Hardaway and third-place finisher Mia Quiroz, while Nicole Alvarez took fifth. Wells followed in ninth with champion Tegan Remington and runner-up RileyJo Glascock, with Dusty Uhlig finishing sixth.
Elko rounded out the top 10 as Saylor Wendell claimed the 120-pound title, while Nevaeh Maynes took fifth and both Alondra Sotelo and Rose Sharp took sixth.
