Mustangs send 4 to podium in 1-point win
WINNEMUCCA – Pershing County edged White Pine by a single point to win the 2A state wrestling championship at the Winnemucca Events Center, closing out a two‑day tournament defined by tight finals and deep Northern Nevada representation across multiple brackets.
The Mustangs finished with 168.5 points and four finalists, including champions James George at 120 pounds, Jeffrey Elerick at 144 and Israel Knight at 165. Pershing County added runner‑up finishes from Ayden Anderson at 113 and Jaxson Happy at 132, along with podium results from Thomas Brooks at 150, Cade Liebsack at 175 and Houston Allen at 215. Their depth across the middle and upper weights allowed them to hold off White Pine, which pushed the title race to the final rounds.
White Pine finished one point back with 167.5 and produced one of the strongest individual showings of the tournament.
The Bobcats earned titles from Jacob Reynoso at 106 and Maddox Sedlacek at 215, along with runner‑up finishes from Cooper Reed at 126, Theron Hernandez at 138, Cainen Sedlacek at 175 and Jacob Hall at 190. White Pine also added fourth‑place results from Talviano Sifre at 144 and Marshall Miller at heavyweight, giving them nine total placers and the deepest finals presence in the field.
Battle Mountain finished third with 116 points behind a lineup that produced three finalists and steady scoring throughout the lower and middle weights.
Donovan Gilbert opened the Longhorns’ weekend with a pin in the 113‑pound final, and Wyatt Madalena added a title at 150. Battle Mountain also earned runner‑up finishes from Lance Stewart at 106 and Leo Mathias at heavyweight, along with third‑place results from Finn Bundrock at 126 and Kaycen Stewart at 138.
Wells placed fourth with 96 points and delivered one of the tournament’s most balanced performances.
Johnny Glascock won the 132‑pound title with a dominant major decision, and the Leopards added runner‑up finishes from Gage Uhlig at 165 and Marcus Uhart at 175. Wells also earned third‑place results from Brylee Henderson at 113 and Maximilian Dahl at 144, along with a fourth from Andre Hernandez at 138.
Pahranagat Valley finished fifth with 77 points and produced four top‑four finishers, including runner‑up results from Rex Marshall at 144, Trueitt Ciserella at 150 and Daniel Miller at 175. The Panthers added a third‑place finish from Maison Auclair at 157 and a fourth from Brock Lasike at 190, giving them representation across the middle and upper weights.
Yerington placed sixth with 69 points and earned two individual titles.
Nathaniel Gutierrez won the 138‑pound championship with a first‑period pin, and Jaden Borsini added another title at 157. The Lions also earned a third‑place finish from Seth Otto at 165, helping them stay ahead of Lake Mead and West Wendover in the standings.
Lake Mead delivered two champions of its own, with Kekoa Aguirre winning at 126 and Gabrian Myers taking the 190‑pound title. The Eagles added a third‑place finish from Ethan Rider at 106 to reach 60.5 points. West Wendover earned a state champion when Isaac Sweat pinned Battle Mountain’s Mathias in the heavyweight final, and the Wolverines added a fourth‑place finish from Andre Hernandez at 138.
Founders produced three placers, including a runner‑up finish from Steven Garrett at 157 and third‑place results from Noah Gamble at 150 and Zander Shapiro at 132. Tonopah added two podium finishes with Wyatt Miller taking second at 120 and Dustin Otteson placing fourth at 165. GV Christian earned two medals, with Joseph Foster finishing second at 215 and Giovani DeLeon taking third.
Incline, Eureka and Beatty each recorded one top‑four finisher. Incline’s Miguel Avila placed fourth at 126, Eureka’s Lian Allred finished fourth at 106 and Beatty’s Pablo Moreno earned fourth at 157. Silver Stage, Laughlin, Carlin, Coral Academy, Owyhee and Round Mountain did not record top‑four finishes.
